Day Four: Late Night Listening Party

I needed to get out into the land of the living today. I took my daughter and her half-brother to see the new Disney flick A Christmas Carol. We saw it in 3-D at an IMAX theater. Let me be the first to tell you all that this is not your sugar-coated fare that we usually get from Disney. It is feast for the eyes, and the story, though stretched at points, is frightening at its core. I heard the crys and sreams of little kids in the audience that were scared stupid by this masterpiece. Look for this movie to garner some big time awards come next year.

Late night listening is:

Day Four: Bill Graham Memorial

Being from the Upper Midwest, I have not had the privilege of meeting the man, but his influence is widely felt throughout the entire scope of this country. All the concert halls that you go to in your home towns can say that they had some kind of sway from Bill Graham. He was a tough as nails guy who wanted nothing but to put on the best the show possible. If you haven't had the opportunity to read his biography, here is an excerpt: http://books.google.com/books?id=wnZ0qL3QdkgC&dq=bill+graham+presents&printsec=frontcover&source=bl&ots=KV9uIMDMb-&sig=YMaqA_sW6LV0RxxYOoi9IfTvqfw&hl=en&ei=F631SqXDMo7oMaTCiekF&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=6&ved=0CBwQ6AEwBQ#

Independent Record Stores

I ran across an article that I need to share with you all. http://www.janisian.com/article-internet_debacle.html
I have downloaded lots of music, but I also purchase a large share of it as well. This may seem like an advertisement but it is just to make you aware of what you in your own areas. The first place is called Electric Fetus. This is one of the best stores of its kind in the Upper Midwest. http://www.electricfetus.com/

The next is called Cheapo Records. This usually wins the award for best record store in our local Magazine called City Pages. http://www.cheapodiscs.com/

In St. Louis, I've been to a great store called Vintage Vinyl. It is on Delmar, and It just down the street from Blueberry Hill where Chuck Berry still plays once a month. http://www.vintagevinyl.com/

If you are in the Seattle area, you need to go to West Seattle to find Easy Street Records. This place is legendary in the grunge scene. Pearl Jam has even played there. They even have a little cafe with killer grub. http://easystreetonline.com/
Support your local independent record stores. All the artists that you like need an outlet besides their show to sell their discs.

Day Three: Steering into Uncharted Waters

It just seems right to head to the front of the hard drive and see what goodies lay in wait. The first show is from Pink Floyd. When I was in my formative years, I had a LP of Dark Side of the Moon that was a pressing from the Original Master Recording. I made a copy of it on tape, and I would listen to it every night before going to bed for 2 years. The second is from the band Rush. Yes, I like Rush. I turned onto the album 21112 when I was in high school. If you have seen the movie I love You, Man, you can understand how someone can be into so many things and still appreciate great music from north of the border. In my honest opinion, they belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On second thought, I take that back, I was at the hall this past summer. It is actually lame compared with EMP in Seattle. That is what you get when you have real money backing the cause of rock and roll. http://www.empsfm.org/

Day Three: 1966 post script

I found that as I listening and playing these shows there was a particular jam that kept coming up. It is from an unmarked show from the perhaps the summer of 1966. It is Good Morning Little School Girl> You Don't Love Me> Good Morning Little School Girl. This jam is twenty minutes of pure bliss. It is worth seeking out (hint hint). Also I need to give a shout out to crew that made the Sixties the happening that changed the world. http://www.key-z.com/

Day Three: 1966 Baptism of Fire complete

Plunging into the recesses of my Hard Drive to start this shindig, I am now finishing up with 1966 Grateful Dead. What a way to break the hold that depression has on me. Let me tell you a little about without bringing you down ( ala Don't Bring Me Down (The Decca Years) (Vinyl)
By: The Animals (Artist) ). I am job hunting with the help of several people. I apply for many jobs through out the week. But on a day to day basis, just getting out of bed is challange. Having this as is a not just a project but almost a pilgramage some where. Where I am going with it is yet determined. It is just important to drag my bones out of bed and face the day.

In between the music and the stuff I need to do at my home while the music is playing, I may go out and face the day and go see a movie. I don't know if you'v noticed that a mojority of the holiday releases are rather short. There are no huge blockbusters yet. But ponder these titles The Box and The Men Who Stare at Goats. I am just saying that she pushes her button in her box somebody dies: don't you think they should have called it Fatal Attraction II? It is no wonder that the men stare at goats.

Day Two: 1966 continues

I thought I would include the Woodblock from Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam that inspired the famous poster from Mouse/Kelley. This skull and Roses would get the name "Bertha", but that would be for many years later. More on that when I get to the shows of the 1971.

Day Two: Late into the evening

As my saga continues, I am reminded of the the many canoe trips that I took as a teenager trough a YMCA camp in Northern Minnesota. The food pack is pump and heavy while we are still feeling kind of green. We have are still getting the feeling of the trail into swagger as we carry our cedar stripped canoes down the portage. The taste of freeze dried meals hasn't quite meshed yet our palates , but soon, it will fuel that fires the furnace of our souls that pushes further onward.

I feel the same as with this year. Having not really heard it fully, I was dimmly ware of the power that it possesed. I felt that it was more a product of the times ( the Sixties Sound) than an organic sound uniquely honed to be their own. As I listened to how the band intertwined their sound, it became more apperent in the songs they jammed on. A Stellar example of this is Dancing in the Street. At times, they will bring up a raga jam that is remimsicnt of East-West ala Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

Early Grateful Dead: Day Two

As I started this journey, I made a small discovery. I went straight to the largest collection first. That is mainly the Grateful Dead. The formative year of 1966 seems to be overlooked by most people. Most people tend to like the periods of the early 1970s to even 1980s. Those that choose the period of the 1992-1995 might have to serious consider what it is that they call the real music. There is nothing like Primal Grateful Dead. It is raw and bluesy with a real urgency for fun. This is the kind of music that took a generation and put it on its head. it is now wonder that there were the house band for the Acid Tests. These happenings turned San Francisco into the Mecca that was sung about in Scott McKenzie's song "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair.)

To make it more interactive and easier, I will include links to the the shows that I am listening so that if you are inclined, you can enjoy the bliss as well. Most of the links come courtesy of http://www.deadlists.com/default.asp

Midnight Hour [11:06] Notes:The 8th song, previously notated as "unknown instrumental" on Deadlists, is a cover of Freddy King's "Heads Up." The 9th tune, previously listed as "The Same Thing (instrumental)," is definitely NOT that song. Although it is astandard blues and sounds similar at the beginning, closer listening makes it pretty obvious that it is an entirely different song, title unknown. The Viola Lee Blues on this expanded version is a different version than on theprevious three song version of Pico Acid Test. This is an ongoing mystery, although it should be said that both versions are worth having.

Disc Six: [41:56]Supplementary CD#2 - San Francisco State Acid Test (alternate version)"Whatever It Is" Festival October 2, 1966San Francisco State University, San Francisco, CAStereo Control Room Master (rec. 4:00AM - 6:00AM)Source(s) unknown, this has different lineage, and some different edits to the "intact" version. The Maiden Voyage

The journey of a million musical notes starts with the first show off my first hard drive. I have a total seven hard drives that are full to the brim of music. I have been an avid collector of music, mostly jam music, but there are the strange and unusual things in the collection as well. The purpose of this blog is to chronicle what is on my hard drives as I play them all in succession.

If I could sum up the underlying passion for this project, it would go back to a conversation I had with a roommate back in 1989. After coming home from a taping session at fellow Dead Head's home ( we had six decks going at the time dubbing many tapes), he asked me, "When, if ever, are you going to listen to all that music?"

That question has haunted me for many years. For the past 5 years, I have had an unquenchable appetite for all this music that has been availble on the internet through P2P sites and Live Music Archive. I would like to say that all of the music I talk about here I will freely share with anybody that asks. Just email me and we can arrange things.

Now to the Music:
