New Year's Eve

On this festive of nights, I am one to keep my own company. When I was younger, I found the holiday more to my liking. There was a celebration that I went to called the Alcathon. It went was a 24 hour marathon sober party for New Year's Eve. There were lots of bands and a ton of people. It was held at the old Minneapolis Convention Center. Sadly, those days are long gone. Besides, I have to work in the morning at 8 AM. The music project will get back on a regular schedule starting the New Year. So to all of you, this goes out to you all: The original version of Robert Burns's Auld Lang Syne for the stroke of Midnight. This is for the first song of the year.

The only music listen to today was discs one and two of Dick's Picks 14.

Road Tripping

Today was spent mulling over a cup of Mocha and cleaning out my email account. I heard some good music while doing that. My picked up my friend from her visit with other friends, we set off on a journey of epic portions. We had to pass through the city of Orlando which has the worst traffic next to Chicago. The list of tunes will follow, but there are some great links to some of the songs we listened: It Sucks to be Me; Rain King and Soul Sacrifice.

St. Augustine

A diversion has taken me to the town of Ormand Beach to drop of my friend to spend some quality time with her her friends. After this, I boogied up to St. Augustine. While there, I visited the lighthouse that was investigated by the Ghost Hunters. They found some great evidence. Here is a good clip of that show. When thinking of St. Augustine, this song comes to mind. Now that we are heading into the throws of winter, we need something to pick us up. The something that always does the trick is chocolate.

"C" World

Take a landlocked person and put him in an environment that celebrates all things of the sea. The hilarity starts right up. The first bit is Tuna-free Dolphin in a can. So the dolphins get back at us and say enough is enough. "So long, and Thanks for All The Fish." (This part is redundant since I already posted the video. It fits with today's blog entry. So sue me.) I helped a friend navigate through the park on a power cart. They were being careful not to hit anybody and anything. They were doing quite well except for me. It seems I became a unintentional target. I got run into several times. There were no permanent marks left. My friend is young and has special needs, but she accomplished something that a college football player that will be playing on New Year's Day can't call his own. He admitted defeat at the hands of a thrill ride while this friend was not supposed to be on the ride in the first place. She came off of it battered but unscathed. As to this athlete, one can only speculate

No music except The Beatles, Grateful Dead on XM and Carbon Leaf's "Indian Summer" CD while on the drive up.

Pool Side Viewing

I got a chance to show my sister the photos of my trip to Ireland. As I was doing this, I showed her the ones I took of the town of Cong where the movie "The Quiet Man" was filmed. This movie is quintessential Ireland on film. I bought a book at the gift shop in Cong, and I brought it with me to read. It is a collection of essays by Irish writers about the the impact of the film on the culture of Ireland as a whole. One of the other movies that is compared to this one is "The Commitments." It is a movie by Alan Parker who did "The Wall" by Pink Floyd. By the way, all the folks in The Commitments are the real deal. The guy who plays the guitar went on to play in the band The Frames. They did this little song called "Slowly Falling" before they did the movie Once, and the won the the Oscar for Original Song. I bought my sister a few items from A Swell Season and The Frames.

Elementary, My Dear Watson

What is the perfect cure for what ails you? Nature's cure-all is that of sleep and a sound one at that. This is what I was lacking. I got a good night's sleep and a fresh perspective today that brightened my mood considerably. I also took to the road and cranked the tunes. I had made a mix of Beatles tunes for my brother that I gave a test run. It sounded so incredible. It was a mix of early and newer ones done up alphabetically. Later in the evening, the family got together to go the the movies. I went to see the new movie Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr. I liked it a lot. When I got back to the house, they had recorded on their DVR The Hound of the Baskervilles with Basil Rathbone; this was an much earlier Sherlock Holmes production done in 1939.

With all the activitity that I am having, it is hard just to sit down and listen to tunes. I have had some going though.

The Big Day Has Landed Like a Thud

Every feel trapped and no matter what you did, you just could not free yourself? This is how I've felt for the past two days. Yeah, I gave gifts and I received gifts. That was a good couple of hours. I even filmed it for a permanent record for the family to replay and enjoy at their conveniences. As with most family vactions, I feel complete ill in my own skin. If I was drinking and doing drugs, I know that the absolute worst would come out as it has in the past. I physically removed myself from the place so that I could have a place to feel more at ease. Being alone in this situation is the best solution. I don't want to ruin any one's fun with my illness. I am so glad the holidays only come once a year.

Twas the night before Christmas

You can't choose your family or how they are going to react to you. This being said, the holidays usually bring out the worst in people and make this time of year a very trying time. You mean I traveled all this way to be treated like crap? I should have stayed at home and hunchered down. Loneliness isn't that bad when you are at home. If you travel out of your element, these feelings become much worse. Next year, I am staying home. I tell myself that every year. I want a new brain that functions much better.

I put this up for the holiday.

Festivus

I realize that not everyone celebrates a holiday this time of year. As a matter of fact, it is probable looked at as an over sentimental exercise of excess. I can see your point. This is why I offer the follow counter point to all of the over commercialized garbage that goes on this time of year with a good old fashioned "Festivus." If you have any grievances to air, an aluminum pole, and are prone to fits of wrestling, you are now set for an exciting evening.

As for me, I am missing a major storm of biblical proportions to be basking in the Southern sunshine this holiday season. My rental sleigh is equipped with XM radio that will give me the ability to get my fill of Grateful Dead on some road trips up coming.

Remember Those That Are Serving Our Country This Holiday Season

I was reminded today of a Christmas many years ago when I was overseas and far from home. I was stationed in West Germany with an Ambulance Company just outside of Nurnberg. I was able to call home Christmas Day and speak with my family to wish them personally a very Merry Christmas. I think of all the men and women who are stationed so far away from their families this holiday season, and I wonder how they must feel. Having been in their boots, I have a pretty good idea. So take a little time to think about all of these people this holiday season. This is not about politics nor religion, but the closeness that we have as fellow country men and women.

Homeless Project

Earlier tonight in many communities around the nation there were vigils to remember the people that died as a result of being homeless. If it was not for the help of many people, I myself would have found myself to be homeless as well. I know that it takes a lowering of the ego and a humble spirit to take the help that is offered. Being diagnosed with both a mental disorder and substance abuse problem, I need to be very cautious of myself so I don't have a relaspse and find the streets as before. I know that this is a common problem with many of the people that are homeless. Just getting them off the streets without doing anything about the underlying problems won't do them any good for long term solutions. The Hans Christian Andersen tale of "The Little Match Girl" came to mind when I heard of this.

Now to lighten the mood, let's get back to some Christmas tunes with Dan Hicks' "Old Fashioned Christmas." You might have heard that Bob Dylan put out a Christmas album. If this track is any indication as to how good it is, we will see with "Must Be Santa." What follows is an obsure Bob Dylan Christmas Song. I just heard this next song this morning while out finishing some last minute shopping. I would have put the link up for the radio program that I listened to on KFAI, but the server was down. This means they did not save the show from this morning. It is a real shame. Here is one of the songs that I do remember them playing, and it comes from Robert Earl Keene "Merry Christmas from the Family."

A Blue Christmas

Well, we are heading into the final stretch till the big day. Are you ready? Have you got everything done on your list yet? I have a few things left to do til I fly south. Not everyone one is done yet, but it is just a matter of going out to get it. There was a major storm that hit the East Coast, so in your honor, I present to you Albert Collins doing "Snowed In." I just thought I would share my favorite harmonica player Little Walter doing the song, "Key to the Highway." I have played the harmonica for over 30 years. I think I am pretty good, but not this good. To Bring it back to the holidays, we have Elvis Presley doing "Blue Christmas" from his 1968 comeback concert. The last is a great version of the classic song "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" by Bruce Springsteen from 1978.

A Beatles Side Project

Today, I got sidetracked into a project that involves a Christmas gift for a couple of people, Let's just say that they will be very happy with what awaits them. In the meantime, I found some post-Beatles videos that reflect the different directions that the Beatles found themselves going. The first is George Harrison's song "Crackerbox Palace." The next is Ringo Starr's song "Photograph." Paul McCartney kept pretty close to the standard formula that had been established when he cut the song "Uncle Albert Admiral Halsey." This would not be complete without the iconic masterpiece of John Lennon's "Imagine." Just for fun, I thought that I put the Peter Seller's zany version of "She Loves You" up for your inspection.

Cosmic Cowboy Style

That's right folks, it is time for another fork in the road. This time we are exploring the cosmic cowboy thing. The Grateful Dead and New Riders of the Purple Sage played Texas in 1971 and 1972. So, this story shared here makes sense in the whole scheme of things. So pay attention please to the following. There are several great examples that ring true. The first is an explanation of the whole concept by Ray Wylie Hubbard's writing the song "Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother." The next song is by David Allan Coe doing a cover of Steve Goodman's song "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" which is described as the perfect country-western song ever written. That reminds me of the line from the Blues Brothers film. When asked at the bar what kind of music that that have, the bar owner says, "We have both kinds - Country and Western." Here's "Rawhide" from the Blues Brothers. What kind of fool would I be without putting in some Willie Nelson. Here is "Angel Flying To Close To the Ground." Finally, this has to be the best hing that i have ever found on the Internet. It is Bob Livingston, who was part of The Lost Gonzo Band that did the first song listed here, that did a tour as a service of the State Department to all parts of the World. He introduced the World to the song "Not Fade Away." Please check this out and dig it.

Remembering Days of Old

Time does strange things to people. I have been retrospective as of late remembering some music and bands of local flavor. You may have never heard of these groups that I'm about to mention, but trust me when I saw that it is not all about Prince in the Twin Cities. The first band that I will introduce you to is The Lamont Cranston Blues Band. Some of the artists in the band were background players to Bonnie Raitt when she cut her first album here in Minnesota. The first song is "E-Jam." The next is an ode to the beginning of the Big River: "Upper Mississippi Shakedown." Now it is time to kick it old school with The Wallets, "Totally Nude." The funkiest grooviest jams are to be had by The Suburbs first off with, "Waiting"; the next song has the strongest grooves for shaking your tush: "Music For Boys."

A Charmed Life

I came very close to meeting my maker in a head on collision with a garbage truck. It missed me by a foot before swerving away. I stopped the car and looked at the tracks that it had left, and the closeness made me ponder my existence. Last year, I was in a major accident at this same time of year. I meet with my job counselor today, and she said that I lead a charmed life. She didn't know anything about the near miss. This made me think of John Prine's song "The Accident." By the way, I own this DVD. The next song come from the same show. It has so much meaning for me on so many levels: "Bruised Orange." The next song is just for fun:" Please Don't Bury Me." The last is for the season: "Christmas in Prison."

Ken Nordine

I was reminded of the voice over guy when he did one of his old pieces at the Oakland Auditorium just before New Year's Eve 1990. Ken Nordine, Jerry Garcia, and Mickey Hart did a recording of "Flibberty Jib" that broadcast at the intermission to the show. I wish I could find it. Here is the original recording. Here is another recording that you might find interesting, "Looks Like It's Going To Rain." This is a late addition to this post but I found what I was looking for. Rush/I Love You, Man (the movie)

AFI (American Film Institute) released its top ten movies for the year today. "I Love You, Man" was not included in the list. I guess the reason for this was that this band from our Neighbor to the North never really gets the credit it truly deserves here in the USA. I am referring to the the Canadian band Rush. Yeah, I saw the movie "The Hangover"; it was funny. When I saw ILYM, I laughed out loud on a crowded plane. Oh by the way, this movie just plain rocks out. I was introduced to Rush while in high school. For thirty-three years, this guy I know is extremely into the group. My introduction came from the Ayn Rand inspired suite called 2112. This is in two parts. part one; part two. Just for the record, Rush is fourth all-time in record sales behind The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Aerosmith.

The music I've been listening to has come from a vine of 18 DVDs of 1969 shows. This will be coming to to a close soon. The show from August 20, 1969 is missing. It is from the Aqua Theater in Seattle, WA. What makes this kind of remarkable to me personally is that I interviewed the gentleman that did the Aqua Follies in Minneapolis before they built that theater in Seattle. The reason for it being there in the first place was that the show was relocated from Minnesota to Washington State. in the 1950's. Ten years later, the stage is graced by our own Grateful Dead. Unfortunately, I don't have a recording of this show.

Glam Rock and other oddities

I'm as straight as they come, but there is something curious about Glam-rock. Take for instance Lou Reed's album Transformer. The two cuts that have musical appeal though the lyrics are are hard to appreciate are "Vicious" and "Walk on the Wild Side." The next is David Bowie's masterpiece "Ziggy Stardust" and "Hang on to Yourself." I couldn't pass this next video up because it has been a recurring thought of someone doing "You Ain't Woman Enough To Take My Man" in drag. I found a video of it, and here it is.

It's a Wonderful Life/Invictus

Two things that separate are very powerful unto themselves, but the combination is undeniably potent. Many years ago as part of my treatment, I was told to watch the movie, "It's a Wonderful Life." This evening I watched it again, and found my self very moved. Life's troubles put him in that position to put himself on the bridge. When the committee starts to chatter and things are going well, it is strange when the idea of putting myself in the same position that George Bailey was in. I don't see anyone like Clarence showing up to save the day. I guess I have to be savior and sinner at the same time.

This leads me to the next point. I saw the new movie "Invictus" today. I didn't realize that the title was based on a famous poem that help Nelson Mandela survive his ordeal in prison. Here is a link to the poem. The movie is a historical piece that highlights the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

Happy Chanukah (Hanukkah)

Since it is the holiday season for many people of many different faiths, I thought it would rather nice to wish our Jewish friends a happy Hanukkah. I have an uncle that is Jewish that married into the family. I don't get much of a chance to see him, but I am very happy to see him when I do. The only thing that I have on the holiday is this video by Adam Sandler.

I missed this from last night, but this is very relevant in regards to the movie "The Fantastic Mr. Fox." As long as we are on the subject of Sweet, I have to share this sonic masterpiece.

Getting into the Holiday Spirit

Now that there is snow on the ground, it is looking more like upcoming holiday season. What we need is some music and laughs. This is to offset all the shopping, cooking and cleaning. The first is a holiday favorite from The Pogues called the "Fairytale of New York." The next is from an American original Tom Waits doing "Silent Night + A Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis." We can't have a good time without a great jam from David Grisman and Jerry Garcia - "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." We need some laughs with Bob and Doug doing "The Twelve Days of Christmas." We can't forget Cheech and Chong doing "Santa Claus and His Old Lady."

Let It Snow

Well, it wouldn't be the holiday season here in land of Lake Wobegon without a few flakes of snow. Everything is being covered in a thick blanket of white that will last until late April or early May. It is not the snow we have to worry so much, but the wind and cold that follows the storm. The windchill are going to be below zero for most of the day tomorrow. This is a good day to stay indoors and listen to the music play. Here is a song for the snow. Here is another song of an unlucky visit to this part of the country.

Dreaming of the Big Apple Day

I am contemplating a trip out East to catch the opening of Grateful Dead exhibit for the New York City Historical Society. Being a person of Upper Midwest descent, it may sound strange to day that I really like New York. It's just the Damn Yankees that I don't like. Everything else is completely kosher. I've been there a couple of time in the past, and I fit right in while feeling at ease. I do take that back. While riding the subway, I had my life flash in front of my eyes when the lights went out for a second. Other than that, I felt just fine.

I have three feel good songs to share for a change: FM by Steely Dan; You're Still a Young Man by Tower of Power; and That's the Way of the World by Earth, Wind and Fire.

I got my SHNs to play!!! So, now I am set to complete the mission.

Resurrection Rag

Well, the news for the day was bringing my PC back to life. It was like a voodoo ritual. I am thinking about calling it Austin on account of this. One thing is for certain, it is like starting fresh. It is a do over of sorts. the bad thing is that I can't play any of my shn files on winamp anymore. It won't accept them. I will have to convert them to play them which will take a large amount of space on a hard drive.

The One That Got Away

Doctor Fantasy is in. I'll handle the store for today. Tonight's little story is a Rock and Roll fable. There was this guy named Dan whose parents had a garage sale with some neighbors. One of them came over with a crate of records. Dan went though them and came across a copy of "The Kingsmen in person - featuring Louie Louie." He thought it looked interesting but didn't buy it. His younger brother bought it for a quarter. By the time he figured out that the album was worth a lot, it was no where to be scene. Flash forward around 30 years later, Dan found himself at the Experience Music Project in Seattle, WA. They have a display featuring music from the Pacific Northwest area. The Kingsmen are from Portland, OR. Behind the glass is another copy of the same record that he once held in his hands. It could have been his, but he let it get away.

So to honor this song, let's sing to it's praises: Louie Louie.

Hunter S. Thompson

Recently, I was reminded of this renegade gonzo writer with the recent release of the group The Band of Heathens. They dedicate the song "LA County Blues" to his memory. I was introduced to his writings when I was around 18 years old. He set for me an example of not putting up with the hypocrisy of governments and institutions. This of course put me in a course that was ripe for strife. Some things are are worth fighting against like the falsehoods put out by a corrupt entertainment system. Motivational posters have made an impact to some. Here are some based on famous sayings of HST. I saw him lecture back in 1988. He was late, of course, but he came out with a quart bottle of Chivas Regal and a toy that he picked up at the airport. He rambled incoherently for a hour and half. He was exactly as portrayed in his books. You can't be more out front than that. It is a real shame that he ended his life the way he did though.

The strange connection between Hunter S. Thompson and the Grateful Dead goes back to two different books both written at the same time: The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolf and Hells Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs by Hunter S. Thompson. The two authors met and arranged a meeting between the Hells Angels and The Merry Pranksters at Ken Kesey's place at La Honda. This party forged a bond that continued for many years after the fact. The meeting of Bikers and Hippies took a huge thumping at Altamont, but you will always count on some bikers as being deadheads.

A Good Reason to Clean

I found a couple of good reasons for cleaning today. I got my PC back from the shop, but I need to find a few discs of important programs that I have to reload onto it. I found two out of three. I have to go out and buy the third one tomorrow. The rest of the day was spent getting the place ready for a visit from a friend. She spent a couple of hours this evening then needed to leave. It all that work cleaning tired me out something fierce. I didn't get much of a chance to listen to a lot of music today, but I did have some play in the background. I would like to share some more though of the that compilation that I put together. Here are six more entries: Money; Eggs and Sausage; The Number of the Beast; So Long and Thanks for All the Fish; Willin'; Roll Over Beethoven (this is the best version, and is better than the one posted earlier)

Music for the Car

The music in this blog so far has been stuff I have been listening to at home. I have a collection of tunes that have been making a regular rotation in my CD player in my car while I am out and about doing stuff. It is a seven disc set of tunes that I culled from the Internet. I will share some of these songs as we go along starting with the very first ones on disc one: Science Fiction/Double Feature; Time Warp; and I'm Waiting for the Man.

Billy McLaughlin

I was channel surfing tonight, and I ran across a special on my local PBS station featuring Billy McLaughlin. He is an amazing guitarist that had a crippling disease. This disease caused him to have to relearn how to play the guitar. I had the good fortune of meeting him in grade school. While in high school, I was in the musical "Godspell", and he was in our orchestra. After high school, he moved to California to pursue his career. I run into him every now and then. He is worth checking out. Here is his website. Here is a link to one of his videos. Here is another song: Fingerdance.

A Plan Is Coming Together

With today being the beginning of December, my thoughts are on the end of the year. I will down in the sunshine of Florida wearing shorts and tee shirts and soakin up the warmth. By that time of year, I will need it. Here in Minnesota, it real cold during the winter monthes. I will have monthes more of cold weather to endure, but at least I will have the memory of the warmth.

Though the song "A Long December" is based on the geographic nature of California, the feelings of the song are something I can relate. I visit the hospital often for my treatments, and it more of a chore at times though it is helping tremendously.

Map of the Human Heart

There was a series on the History Channel where they showed colored film that was found of World War II after a an extensive search. It reminded me of a film that came out in back in 1993 called "Map of the Human Heart." It is very moving movie that spans the lives of tw very different people from their first contact as children through their adulthood. It also takes place during WWII. It has one of the best endings of a movie I have ever seen. There have been other movies with similar endings, but not this romantic. I am a romantic at heart, but I only do it in small doses for now. That could change. Here is a brief rundown of the movie.

Black Friday Post Holiday Stuffed To the Gills Blues

Where are you at today? Slaving for a sale? Spending time with the family? Wondering where the hell your resolve went when it came to all the food you ate yesterday? Depression sets in when you realize that you still have piles of leftovers in your refrigerators that will last you until the next round in a couple of weeks. Of course, I mean the Winter holiday of your choice. I don't want to discriminate here. I have my personal nightmare holiday where fun is crammed down your throat until you feel like screaming or withdrawing into your self that you long for the deep freeze that is January. I think it is more of the disease talking than anything at this moment. So, what I try to do to do to get out of the mental funk is to be of service to others. I have to get out of my rotten melon. When I go to Florida to visit family, I will plan on making a meal for everyone. I will have to give it some thought. Here are songs for Black Friday: Black Friday By Steely Dan and Black Friday Rule by Flogging Molly

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today is the day that we give thanks to our creator or higher thought processes for the the blessings that we have received for the past year. In spite of my decreased mental capacity, I have been able to do a lot of travel this past year: Ohio, Ireland and upcoming Florida. I plan on spending the day with my brother and his roommates eating turkey and watching football. Later on tonight, I plan on continuing the marathon of music. More on that later.

Here are a couple of clips that are quite topical for today. The first is a traditional telling of Alice's Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_7C0QGkiVo

The second is a clip from the old show WKRP in Cincinnati. To set up the clip, they had a stunt by dropping turkeys out of a helicopter. They just plummeted straight to the ground and spattered. The clip is regarded by TV Guide as the funniest ever uttered on TV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FXSnoy71Q4

Ninja Assassin for Breakfast

I got woken up to the worst news possible concerning my PC. In order to fix it, they have to do a complete system restore which will put it back to a like new status. All the programs that I had on it will be gone. I was making fun of all the women shoppers for the upcoming Black Friday shopping spree by comparing them to Ninja Assassins (the new movie that starts today). Well, the attack that I got had it lasting repercussions that totaled my PC. I better watch what I laugh at or it will bite me in the ass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMD7Ezp3gWc

I have stuff to do today that will keep my mind off this bad news. I am making a green bean casserole for tomorrow. I am also picking up a pumpkin pie with whipped cream topping for dessert. I will have much more to say on this all.

Hail! Hail! Rock and Roll

Earlier this summer, I gave a gift to girl who was turning sweet sixteen. The gift? A CD of Chuck Berry's Greatest Hits. I also asked a friend to help me with this quest. He gave me a disc of 31 choice tunes. When these songs came out originally, they made a huge impact on our English neighbors. Most of the music that came from England during the early 1960s was the same music that was not being heard by the white audience. That is why the "X" (if you missed this, look back at the earlier posts on Pirate Radio) was so influential. I am including a rare recording of Roll Over Beethoven: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gz1VOQWR6cA I am also including what I feel is the best cover of this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxXl4oS9wss Chuck Berry is alive and doing well these days. Human Struggle for dominance

Its football Sunday again, and the Minnesota Vikings played the Seattle Seahawks in the scheduled match. I have family living in the Seattle area that are fans of the Seahawks. It was not their finest hour. I was very reluctant to be a Farve backer when he came to the Vikings, but now that we are second in the NFC at 9-1, I feel that it is possible that we can make it to the big show. We have some big games still left to play, so it is not yet wrapped up.

Two other games that come as a complete surprise to all are: Kansas City Chiefs (3-7) beats Pittsburgh Steelers (6-4) by a score of 27-24 in overtime; and Oakland Raiders (3-7) defeats Cincinnati Bengals (7-3) with a score in regulation of 20-17. The Little guy can defeat the big guy. This story is is very old, and it continues to this very day.

I bring this all up in comparison to a show I just caught on public TV about fire walkers from Fiji. They were walking on stones that had been heated to a temperature of 1200 degrees. This is still being done today. The challenge of overcoming the elements and one's self has been an integral part of the culture of mankind. We like to think of ourselves as men and women of peace. The letting go self and becoming apart of larger part is only a piece of this puzzle. The mind is very powerful tool if used correctly.

The music for today is back to the Grateful Dead. This hard drive file did not get sorted, so everthing is kinda disjointed.

Introduction to Dr. Fantasy

There is a persona that has been floating around for many years. His time has come to surface. I would like you to meet Doctor Fantasy. He is part late night DJ on a underground radio, and the kind of guy that you'd meet working at a dive record shop in a small town. Though a combination of two songs from a couple of different artists, this unique blend breathes life to a character that will help with this project. One needs all the friends he can get even if they are fictional. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEOlTZGuLKM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxVlN-LzIks

Odd Occurances

There were two resignations in the entertainment field this week. One was huge, but the other was barely a whisper in comparison. The first was Oprah Winfrey who gave up her show after a 25 year run. Her sway as a media mogul is set while she contemplates her next venture. The talk is that she is going to start a new cable channel. I wish her well in this latest endeavor. The second is the John Kadlecik from Dark Star Orchestra. He was with the band for twelve years since their inception. I know that that this is a really stretch to put the two together in the same vein. They both competed people's souls at a time when they need it most. The latter may not have had the major impact, but it did soften the pain that was left over when Jerry died. Random thoughts for a Thursday

There was more job hunting to be done today. I saw something rather random tonight. I was watching the show "Flash Forward", and a Japanese girl pulled up a Bob Dylan video on her computer. She was either learning the cords or doing air guitar. I have the complete video plus footage that was never released, but I will share with you the video that she was watching. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6C_WSp3Lks

I have been dealing with "thoughts" again. Some of these are not really helpful especially when they tell you that they are good ideas. I have an appointment coming up so that is good. I am reminded of the movie "Harold and Maude." When I was young, I would keep track of it playing at the West Gate theater. I would be held over for weeks and weeks. I believe it was held over for 106 continuous weeks. When they stopped showing it. the theater closed for good. Years later, I got a job at a dry cleaners. After looking around the place, I was aware that this was once a theater. I asked if it was once the West Gate, and it sure was. Here is a song from that movie that from time to time I can relate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKwnE_jR8l8

Rock and Roll Connections

Connections can be found in the strangest of places. This is probable one of the craziest that comes to mind. Try this question on for size: What does the movie Rocky Horror Picture Show and Sci-Fi Channel's Ghost Hunters have in common? The answer: Meatloaf. It seems he he is a big fan of Ghost Hunters, and he requested that he join the show as a guest investigator. Here is his song "Hot Patootie" from RHPS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hz99mdwojgo
I am Includeing a clip from the show with him investigating with the TAPS team: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFgfSylMylQ Here is a clip that explains how this came about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz_LAGSU4WE

The first of many collections

There was a project that ran in conjunction with the book Dead to the Core by Eric Wybenga. I featured a series of shows and songs that were by the author's claims to be the best representation of the bands music. Some of the collection was not included because they were official releases. Other shows or close proximity's were used. http://www.bookclubs.ca/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780385316835

The music for tonight:

In Search of the Elusive Job

As I head out into the sunshine of this fine Tuesday to meet with one of Employment councilors, I am reminded of the oldie that had graced the airwaves of the late 1950s. It is the group The Silhouettes doing the song "Get a Job." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hkJL6wRBE8 I know that I have putting a lot of press towards this topic, and it may just dominate it further. The economy makes it possible to get the things that I need. I have been getting by with the bear essentials and with help of family, but I would really like to make some headway over my disorder if it is at possible. So in the mean time, I found the perfect song that best describes my situation at this moment. It is by Steve Goodman. He is the man responsible for writing the classic "City of New Orleans" that was made famous by Arlo Guthrie. The song title is "The I Don't Know Where I'm Goin', But I Goin' Nowhere In a Hurry Blues." I first heard this song performed at a talent show while in high school. I was into folk and blues music while in high school, so this song was something could really grasp. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiO7CLPHXek

Feels like a Monday

Today has been just another day. I did spend time with my daughter doing some early Christmas shopping for her friends. We bought music for her friends at my favorite store (The Electric Fetus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Fetus http://www.electricfetus.com/) I did pick up the latest recoding by the band A Band Of Heathens. I saw them perform on Austin City Limits this past Saturday night. I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but I am looking forward to it. There will be more on it later. They are quite excellent. http://video.pbs.org/video/1305414196/ Elvis Costello is really good in the video.

Today's music has been a continuation of 10KLF 2006:

A Port in the Storm

I had a serious set back to adventure. My PC was attacked, it it had gotten a virus. I had to bring it into the shop to repair it. I am on another computer to continue the journey. For the next week I will going through my smaller drives. The formatting will change somewhat, but that is to be expected.

Last night, I saw a movie that is a slice of history that needed to be told. It is called Pirate Radio. Since it took place in England in 1966, we here in America may think that we might not have a connection to such an event. I mean, how could a pirate radio station have such pull on the folks in the U.S.A. at the same time? Well. There was such a station that broadcast out of Mexico just over the border called XERB-AM with the legendary Wolfman Jack at the microphone. He was immortalized in the film American Graffiti. This station was also praised in song by ZZ Top in their song "I Heard It on the X". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPAR2zSV84I

Rock and Roll Will Never Die

I just got back from seeing a very fine film called "Pirate Radio." It captures the spirit of the age the the true soul of what rock and roll is really about: REBELLION. Rock and Roll is not just a mere expression to get one's body moving like you were in a damn gym, but it is to generate great passions that generate such such emotions that you are moved to do tremendous feats never dreamed. It takes commitment and a zeal to push past the boundaries that hold back our "civilized" world. I once had a position in Radio, I had the over night gig at a station in Northern Minnesota. A choice article came over the wire. After David and Angela Bowie got divorced in 1980, there was a ten year gag order placed on her not to say anything about the marriage. When it was up, she hit all the talk show circuit saying that she caught David in bed with Mick Jagger. I remembered a video that the once had done together called "Dancin' in the Streets." I thought. I thought that should rename the song in their honor as "Dancin' in the Sheets." I said this on the ramp for the original by Martha Reeves and The Vandellas.

I believe in the radio, Corporate radio has sucked the life out of it, and repackages it into another pile of crap. Yes, I am talking about Satellite radio. 150 channels of repackaged reprogrammed crap that you really don't have a say in. Is it anything original, or is it a rehash of the same crap you've heard your whole life? What then is the answer? The only true bastion of radio that has held close to its roots and has fought tooth and nail to exist. This is Community Radio. It exists in some of the larger communities on the left hand of the dial. They usually broadcast at low power, so they have flown under the radar for quite some time. But trust me, They are worth seeking out. Here is tool to help out: http://radio-locator.com/ The playlists vary with the station and the hour. Here are a few examples: http://kpfa.org/ http://wbai.org/ http://www.kfai.org/ One last thing about these stations, you can stream these online

Live/Dead

Many years ago, I had friend named Tim that brought some other guys over to my house to hang out. These guys I knew from a meeting with both attended, but they were not into the music of the Grateful Dead. They were self-confessed Metel Heads. They loved the music of Metellica. Tim's idea was to turn them on to other music and see what happens. We warmed them up with Passion, Grace & Fire by John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola and Paco de Lucía. they couldn't believe that jazz guitars could be played that fast. Then it was Terrapin Station By the Grateful Dead off of the ablum of the same name. We played for them Live/Dead. This just blew them apart. By the time Dark Star was over, they were asking me if I had any crayons and paper. They got a sudden urge to be creative. They were totally digging it. This from Metal-Heads. Now the kicker. This was all done while being sober. The magic of the music can move people.

Day Eleven: The Heart of 1969

At the tale end of of the marathon, I dove back into the Grateful Dead files. I stated chipping away at the year 1969. I acquired most of this year in a vine at a forum that I frequent. There were two 1969 vines going around so they thought it best to just combine the two. This is the pool that I'm drawing from to complete the leg of the journey.

I have heard some talk from people that the computer domain is different that reality. I am not so sure of that. All of my hopes, fears, dreams aspirations, and anything that is going on in my mind (either good or bad) can be found on the Internet. I find that anyplace I go on the net is just an extension of me. So therefore, any problem I have stems from me and not the Internet itself. If I seem distance at times from some of the forums that I belong, I blame the depression for this. But there are the rare occasions where the an individual can really set me off. In this case, It it more a personality conflict than anything else. Those I deal on an individual basis.

Let's dive into the heart of the music:

A rememberance of a special book

Today as I was browsing through a site that I visit often, someone had remarked that they had recently seen a movie about Christine F. This jogged a long lost memory of mine. Though this is not the most reliable source of information on the web, it scratched the curiosity itch well. It seems that when I was in the Army in West Germany back in 1985 someone I had met at a meeting had recommended this book to me called Christiane F. – Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo. It was about a teenage drug addict in the streets of Berlin. Why it struck a cord with me was that the girl was my age. I was doing drugs at her age as well. My life was not as bad, but I felt felt like a living hell internally. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christiane_F. It is a miracle that I survived that period of my life. Actually, I feel most of the time like a walking contradiction.

"Well then Fido got up off the floor an' he rolled over An' he looked me straight in the eye An' you know what he said? Once upon a time Somebody say to me (This is a dog talkin' now) What is your Conceptual Continuity? Well, I told him right then (Fido said) It should be easy to see The crux of the biscuit Is the Apostrophe(')Well, you know The man who was talkin' to the dog Looked at the dog an' he said: (sort of staring in desbelief)"You can't say that!"He said:"IT DOESN'T, 'n YOU CAN'T! I WON'T, 'n IT DON'T! IT HASN'T, IT ISN'T, IT EVEN AIN'T 'N IT SHOULDN'T . . .IT COULDN'T!"He told me NO NO NO!I told him YES YES YES!I said: "I do it all the time . . .Ain't this boogie a mess!" (Stinkfoot by Frank Zappa, from "Apostrophe" 1974) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9FBQ1O5F8k

Day Ten: The Marathon continues

When I was in Ireland, I had this crazy idea of merging two ideas into one. This was to have the Time Warp Dance performed just outside the neolithic structure called Newgrange. What purpose would this serve? It make history come alive with just silliness. If Monty Ponty can do send ups of English history, why then can't an Irishman make silly of his own? This is just a thought. So I have to tell you that Newgrange got even with me for having such thoughts. I was never told that the enterence was very narrow. I am a rather large person. I almost got stuck going in and coming out. I may have very well trapped others in there with as well. They would have had to tear it down to get me out. Awe well, such is the folly of man.
I continued the marathon late last night without adding to the files. Here is what is being played:
