Progress Report

Today in honor of the KPFA's Grateful Dead Marathon, I am taking stock of most of the shows that I have played so far in my quest to go through my hard drives.  All the Grateful Dead shows will have links to where you can listen to them yourself.  It is just a matter of picking the shows that you want.

Workingman's Blues

I am doing a long stretch of work in a row.  This is a good thing in a weird way.  I have yet to make it to my first 90 day review, and they are already asking me to work extra shifts.  It is either because I am doing a good job or because thay can't find anyone else to fill the slots.  Either way, it means more more pay in my pocket and more exercise for my frame.  I am getting along with the ever-shifting managers except for one.  This my thorn in my side.  I just want to do a good job, but they have other goals in mind.  Our styles are clashing.  I am glad it is only the one that I struggle.  Somehow, this manager's mindset reminds me of what it was like when I grew up as a kid.  My father and I didn't have the best relationship because of my reluctance to conform to his ideals.  I fought it as if my life depending on it.  I realize now that I was taking things way out of context.  As I have gotten older, we see more eye to eye on many subjects.  This song by Cat Stevens seems to fit when I was younger: "Father and Son."

Art for Art's Sake

Tonight, I took in an art show at a local school.  A friend had some of her art on display for the show.  I must say that it was very good. I have a good eye for art.  I do very well when it comes to photography, but I can't draw a lick.  The sensibilities of an artist must be fostered if they are to florish in the skills of the art.  The place where she is studying is the best of all possibilities. The school has programs for visual, drama, and music.  I only wish I could have gone to such a school like that when I was young.  I wanted to be an actor, but I had too many problems that derailed the dream.  I could be like Grandma Moses of the photography set, or yet write the ultimate story that gets turned into a play or movie.  Who knows what might happen?  One can still dream the dream before the sun sets.
With this, I offer the song "Artists Only" by The Talking Heads.

No More Breakfast Of Champions

I am planning on going to see the new movie "Shutter Island"  this Sunday right after work.  I work in the mornings real early at a store in a mall.  There is a movie theater where I enter the mall.  I saw "The Wolfman" at this theater right after work as well.  When I saw that movie, I was compelled to get my "ususal" (a large popcorn and large coke). I have to make better choices when I go out if I want to lose the weight.  I made a joke with the guy at the concession stand when I said, "Mmm, breakfast of champions."  I don't plan on doing that this time.  I may get something to eat, but it won't be that large.  I will go to lunch after the movie for a healthy meal.

Social Networking for Idiots

I have given it some thought, and I came to a realization.  I need to get the word out more about my blog.  So, I joined Facebook.  I will do more with this than I did when I joined Myspace.  That venture kind of died on the vine.  I put in my old school, and there were names that I haven't seen in along time.  My only problem is what would I say to these people?  I realize that their lives have gone on in ways I can only see in my dreams.  Tha is not really true.  I have visited other places in my dreams, and they are not very exciting at all.  As a matter of fact, it is like a slice of the reality that I live only more urban like in a rundown apartment in the inner city. It is kind of hard to be real upbeat and optimistic, but I try to be when talking to people.  I will see where it takes me.  Hopefully, there will be some good at the end of tunnel.

Upcoming Grateful Dead Marathon

This weekend on KPFA from Berkeley, CA will be a Grateful Dead marathon and fundraiser.  In honor of this occasion, I will put together all the links of all the GD shows that I have listened to so far.  I plan on giving my money and attention to the marathon, but with all these links up, you can pick and choose which shows that you may want to listen.  This is three month wrap up.  I'm new to this all, but I think that it has merit.  It also helps me focus on what I have done so far.  Later on, I will do one that focuses on all the individual songs that I have put up.

St. Valentine's Day

Today is the day of love and romance for all the couples out there.  I would like to say that I have been single so long that I'm afraid I am an old maid of sorts.)  Just recently, the coals of my cold, cold heart have started to be flamed by the friendliness of some young women.  This is strange since I did nothing to encourage the advances.  I usually happens this way.  It is like the old song, "Man Smart, Woman Smarter."  I say that I am a romantic at heart.  Here are a couple of great songs for the holiday. "Something So Right" by Paul Simon.  The next is "If I Had The Wold To Give" by the Grateful Dead.  The next song is "Believe It Or Not" by the Grateful Dead (sorry for the quality of the video).  Here is a link to the lyrics.  I think that's enough.  If it weren't for these feelings, this holiday could have taken a darker tone.  Where love is concerned, hope springs eternal even in these dark days of winter.

When I was about 10 years old, our local tv station ran footage of this show.  The reasoning behind this making such news was the size of the crowd. This was my first exposure to the Grateful Dead.
